Aims of the scheme

ICaN projects deliver actions that address nature recovery, and climate change mitigation, adaptation and resilience. Use the links below to find out more about how ICaN will help to ensure that nature, communities, and businesses remain vibrant, sustainable, and resilient to the challenges ahead.

The Climate Challenge

The Problem

Global warming could exceed 2.9°C this century unless greenhouse gas emissions fall dramatically (The Climate Emergency). This threatens biodiversity, food security, and human health.

Our Response

ICaN strengthens ecosystems to unlock climate resilience:

  • Planting Trees to absorb carbon and pollutants, cool urban areas and buffer storms, slow stormwater runoff and boost biodiversity.
  • Stormwater management reduces sewage release into rivers and lowers flood risk.
  • Decarbonising projects cut emissions, for example, replacing fossil fuel boilers with air source heat pumps.

Why It Matters

Meeting the Paris Agreement target of limiting warming to 1.5°C requires halving emissions by 2030 and reaching net zero by 2050 (Inger Andersen, UNEP). ICaN projects contribute to these global goals and help communities adapt and increase their climate resilience.

Key Stats

“The risk of species extinction increases with every degree of warming.”

“At 2°C increase, 99% of coral reefs will vanish.”

“Scientists predict that based on mid-range climate-warming scenarios, by 2050, 15-37% of species will be committed to extinction.” Extinction risk from climate change | Nature
